HDSP investigates Facility D riot

According to a statement received by Lassen News this morning, at 10:10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, 2023, approximately 50 incarcerated people began fighting in the Facility D Recreation Yard at High Desert State Prison.

Officers immediately responded and gave multiple orders to stop. When the fight continued, staff used non-lethal blast grenades, impact and stinger rounds to quell the incident.

All participants were medically evaluated and 13 were treated for minor injuries. Four participants were transported to outside medical facilities for a higher level of care. Three were treated and returned to HDSP. One person was hospitalized. No staff injuries were reported.

HDSP’s Investigative Services Unit responded and processed the scene, discovering four inmate-manufactured weapons. Participants have been moved to restricted housing and the investigation into the incident continues. No further information is available at this time.

Yesterday, Lassen News filed a California Public Records Act request for all publicly disclosable information regarding this incident. A public information officer at HDSP said he had emailed the information to Lassen News before we filed the CPRA.  For some unknown reason, that information was not received.
