A head-on collision on Bass Hill killed two men and woman driver suffered major injuries, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP reported the accident occurred about about 5:14 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16.
According to the statement, an unidentified Susanville man, 73, was driving a 2003 Infiniti on Highway 395 at an unknown high rate of speed. The driver attempted an unsafe pass around several cars with insufficient room and drove from the northbound lane into the southbound lane still traveling northbound. The Susanville man was killed in the crash.
An unidentified woman from Mesa, Arizona, 60, was driving a 2019 Mazda southbound at approximately 65 miles-per-hour. The woman saw the other car and took evasive action by swerving to the right onto the southbound shoulder of Highway 395. The oncoming vehicle also swerved onto the southbound shoulder and the two vehicles collided head-on. An unidentified passenger in the Mazda, a 78-year-old man from Mesa, Arizona, was killed in the crash and the driver suffered major injuries. She was transported by SEMSA Air ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno, Nevada.
