Approximately 11:10 a.m. Sunday, May 15, Susanville CHP Dispatch received multiple calls of a reckless driver, traveling east from Susanville in a 1996 Toyota Camry. The driver continued onto Highway 395 heading southbound. CHP units were enroute but were unable to intercept the driver prior to the collision.
The driver, an unidentified 65-year-old man from Spokane, Washington, crossed over the center line into the northbound lane of Highway 395 and into the path of oncoming traffic, for reasons still under investigation.
Edgar Guzman, 31, of Reno, Nevada, was traveling northbound on Highway 395 at Wran Road. He saw the oncoming vehicle and swerved to the right but was unable to avoid being struck by the wrong-way driver. Subsequently, the crash caused Mr. Guzman’s vehicle to overturn. The wrong-way driver was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries. Mr. Guzman and his passengers (three unidentified juveniles, 4, 9 and 14) were all wearing their seatbelts, and received moderate injuries.
