Highway 44 crash kills Nevada man

A Sparks, Nevada man died in a solo-vehicle crash on Highway 44 west of Highway 36 about 7:13 p.m. Wednesday, June 28.

According to a statement from the California Highway Patrol, a witness told the CHP Douglas Strand, 69, was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Impala at a high rate of speed before it left the roadway and rolled down an embankment.

Personnel from CalFire, the Susanville Fire Department and SEMSA performed lifesaving measures, but the driver succumbed to his injuries on scene.

The accident remains under investigation.
