Wade Workman, chair of the Lassen Sportsmen’s Club, announced the cancellation of this year’s Junior Fishing Derby until “sometime in August.”
According to a statement from Workman, he made the decision to postpone the derby based a input from the Susanville Fire Chief, city of Susanville senior staff and the Fishing Derby Committee.
According to the statement, “The Susan River is predicted to have flows in excess of what is considered safe. Given the high flows, very warm air temperatures and very cold temperature of the water, anyone falling in would be in immediate distress and facing a difficult rescue situation. The only correct decision is to postpone until a later date … We will regroup and begin planning for the event in August.”
