Lady Cougars extend win streak to six

The Lassen College Lady Cougars headed to Modesto, California Thursday, Dec. 5 for the third annual Modesto College basketball tournament.

The Lady Cougars walked away the victors of the tournament after three straight wins, the first being against Victor Valley College where the Lady Cougars took a 68-58 win in overtime. Then Saturday they faced off against the home team, Modesto Junior College for a 77-68 win.

The Lady Cougars finished the tournament Saturday, Dec. 7 against Napa Valley College with a crushing 108-30 victory.

Victor Valley College
The Modesto tournament started Thursday, Dec. 5 for the Lady Grizzlies against the Victor Valley College Lady Rams.

The game started close with the Lady Cougars, leading 26-25 by halftime but came back with an aggressive defense that forced the Lady Rams into several turnovers.

The two teams took it to overtime, but Ikela Green, who scored a total 25 points, led the Lady Cougars through overtime to make several key baskets helping the Lady Cougars finish with a 68-58 victory.

Sophomore Dar’Juannah Harris totaled 19 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Rionna Haymon put up a solid performance finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Coach Derrick Jackson said, “Good teams find a way to overcome adversity and figure out a way to win close basketball games, and that’s what we did tonight.”

Modesto Junior College
Following the overtime victory the Lady Cougars went against the then unbeaten Modesto College.

The Lady Cougars got off to a strong start coming in with a balanced attack leading 23-13 as they exited the first quarter.

They kept the pressure up against the Modesto Ladies by forcing the turnovers off a dominant defense that took the Lady Cougars to a 77-65 win.

Green again led the Lady Cougars tallying 18 points, while Irish Winn had 16 points and seven assists. Point guard Keva New Holy added 16 points and eight assists.

Napa Valley College
The Lady Cougars finished the Modesto Tournament in style when they took on Napa Valley College.

The Lady Cougars set the pace early, leading the game 27-3 by the end of the first quarter. Going into half time the score widened even further for the Napa Valley Ladies, who fell to 52-10 before the third quarter.

The momentum didn’t stop for the Lady Cougars who ran circles around the Napa defense, and it showed as Green, who led the Lady Cougars through the tournament, boasted 31 points. She was also named the Modesto Tournament MVP.

Following the end of the tournament, Coach Jackson said, “We are really peaking at the the right time of the season, and we are definitely getting better each game.”

After taking the gold at the Modesto Tournament, the Lady Cougars now sit at 11-1 for the season. The Lassen Ladies headed to Fairfield for the Solano Tournament Friday, Dec. 13 through Sunday, Dec. 15.
