Lady Cougars win season opener at home

The Lassen Lady Cougars basketball team opened its season Wednesday, Nov. 6 with a 76-55 win over Simpson University JV at home.

The Lady Cougars came in aggressively out of the gate, that helped them control possession early leading to a 9-0 score early on, that only got wider as the game went on.

Simpson was forced to work for every basket with the Lady Cougars brandishing a mighty defense, switching to a box and one to slow down Simpson’s lead shooter Sandra Benocal, who scored 23 points for Simpson in the first half but was slowed down to two points in the second half.

At the start of the second half the Lady Cougars led 36-23 with Sophomore Ikela Green taking lead of the Lassen scoring finishing with 26 points as well as six assists.

Returning sophomore DarJuanah Harris also put on a stellar performance shooting 17 points along with eight rebounds and three assists. Freshman point guard Keva New Holy recorded eight assists in her debut game with the Lady Cougars.

Freshman guard Irish Wynn finished off Simpson with seven assists, five rebounds and two steals, while freshman Rionna Haymon came out with eight points for the team and eight rebounds as well as putting out a great defensive effort.

The Lady Cougars went to serve Simpson another dose of Cougars basketball Sunday, Nov. 10, Results were unavailable at press time but look for the results in the Tuesday, Nov. 19 issue of the Lassen County Times.
