Lady Grizzlies, first at Shasta Holiday Tournament

On Thursday, Dec. 12 the Lassen High School Lady Grizzlies basketball team made their way to Mt. Shasta for the Mt. Shasta Holiday Tournament.
The Lady Grizzlies put on a spectacular performance beating Etna, 45-28, then Yreka, 48-25, and lastly they claimed victory over Klamath Union 60-39 to become the 2019 Champions of the Mt. Shasta tourney.

The Lady Grizzlies came into the first game of the tournament assertive, with a masterful defense against the Etna Lions, who couldn’t score higher than eight points per quarter.

Ronnie Merrill took charge of the Lady Grizzlies’ assault scoring 15 points, while teammate Hannah Langenhorst, put up nine points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Grizzlies kept the same momentum they showed against Etna going into the Friday, Dec.13 game against the Yreka Miners.

The first quarter spoke volumes of the Miners’ defense, as the Lady Grizzlies’ defense ran roughshod around the Lady Miners forcing turnover after turnover, putting the Lady Miners back 16-4 behind the Lady Grizzlies at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Grizzlies kept the pressure, but Yreka managed to make an attempt to catch up in the second and third quarters. But in the final quarter the Lady Grizzlies pulled out all the stops, holding the Yreka Ladies’ offense to a low scoring two point quarter.

Hailey Mena took over the Lady Grizzlies’ scoring, recording 14 points and four rebounds. Caitlyn Crosby and Merrill both finished the game with nine points apiece.
