Lady Grizzlies overcome Falcons in three sets

The Lassen High School Lady Grizzlies went head-to-head against the Central Valley Falcons Thursday, Oct. 17 and came out on top in three sets, 25-22, 25-14 and 25-15.
The first set was a back and forth battle with both teams taking then retaking the other for the lead.

The Lady Grizzlies led very early on taking the first three points of the set, until Central Valley pulled out all the stops to bring the game to a tie and eventually overtake them at the 14-13 mark.

Kelli Walsh led in attacking and kills in the first set while Alice Li was the Lady Grizzlies guard on the net.

The second set was much easier for the Lady Grizzlies. Mila Knezevich helped the team take a early lead with two aces off serves early on, serving for a total of 11 points in the second set.

Li was again a bulwark at the net, and Ronnie Merrill getting the big hits to throw the Falcons off their game.

Going into the third set, Knezevich started with two aces for the Lady Grizzlies and serving for the first four points of the set.

The Falcons became their own worst enemy, however, as their visible frustration showed and their communication on position waned.

But it was the hot streak of Lindsay Canadas who served for eight points in the third set that helped the Lady Grizzlies establish their lead late into the set.

The Falcons made even further mistakes once the game reached 22-15, with the Lady Grizzlies on top. The Falcons netted the final three balls to fall to the Lady Grizzlies.

The Lady Grizzlies face off against Anderson Cubs tonight Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Anderson High School. Look for the results in the Tuesday, Oct. 29 issue of the Lassen County Times.
