Lady Grizzlies serve up LHS sports season

Lassen High School sports has kicked off just two days into the school year with the Lassen High School girls volleyball taking on the Willows Honkers in a non-conference, pre-season game Tuesday, Aug. 20.

The freshman girls started the afternoon, defeating the visiting Honkers 2-0; JV girls also followed with a 2-0 victory. The Lady Grizzlies first outing sadly ended in a loss.

Freshman girls knocked it out of the Cave in their first outing, pulling out the clinch in the end after being down 20-16 in the second set, Saydee Mueller with some pin point serving, and Aaralyn Penaloza not afraid of to dig for the save pulled it back to tie 21-21. The freshman girls then focused all their energy to finish with a 25-22 win.

Freshman Coach Vickie Schmidt said, “I couldn’t have been more proud of the freshman’s first game. We only had three practices and they played with energy determination, made some great saves, and supported each other.”

JV’s game was a close two sets, but between Kennedy Wharton defense at the net, with Graceyn Harlans backing her up for the assists. The combined had six aces off serves, and 26 total points off serves.

The Lady Grizzlies faced a stiff competition but in contrast never lost their cool and kept the game competitive. The new face of the Lady Grizzlies volleyball is impressive Mila Knezevich as the Lady Grizzlies libero couldn’t be a better fit, not afraid to dive and dig for the save and ensuring the back line is covered.

Look out for Kelli Walsh as the outside hitter, she was on point with her passes and landed an awesome spike against the Honkers.

The Lady Grizzlies season has just started as they faced off at home against Las Plumas Thursday, Aug. 22. Results were unavailable at press time, but look for the results in the Tuesday, Sept. 3 issue of the Lassen County Times.
