LaMalfa, Biden agree on diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Olympics

According to a statement from Congressman Doug LaMalfa, the Biden administration announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. Calls for a diplomatic boycott from lawmakers have increased in the recent months due to China’s human rights mistreatments of minority groups.

Currently, the United States, United Kingdom, European Union and Canada have sanctioned China due to their detainment and genocide of ethnic Muslim Uyghurs. This boycott means that no delegation of U.S. officials will attend the games. However, athletes will continue participate as normal.

“I am happy that the Biden administration finally agrees with the position my Republican colleagues and I have been calling to be implemented for months and announced a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games,” LaMalfa said. “I look forward to cheering on the athletes on Team USA, but our government cannot grant China a shred of support in light of their long history of abuses.”
