Lassen County K-12 schools move to distance learning until Dec. 31

COVID-19 cases continue to rise and the Lassen County Public Health Officer issued a K-12 school closure for in-person instruction through Dec. 31.

According to a Monday, Nov. 23 statement from the Lassen COVID-19 Incident Command, the Lassen County Public Health Officer has issued an order directing all schools in Lassen County (K-12) to close for in-person instruction and move to distance learning effective immediately until Dec. 31, 2020.

“We realize that the magnitude of this order comes with many questions, and we ask that you please give the schools time to prepare updates prior to calling your individual school district with requests and needs,” read the statement.

“Due to the rapid increase of positive cases within Lassen County and in order to protect the health and safety of our families, employees, and the community at large, we are looking at various mitigating strategies to slow the spread of the virus. We are committed to keeping the community informed of any changes regarding this order and ask that you please work together to slow the spread of this virus,” it continued.

The Public Health Department would like to remind the public of the following simple steps which can
reduce or prevent the spread of any respiratory illness, including COVID-19:

  • Wear a mask if/when possible;
  • Wash your hands with liquid soap and water for at least 20 seconds, or if you do not have soap you can use alcohol-based sanitizer of at least 60% alcohol;
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when coughing or sneezing, do not use your hands;
  • Stay home if you are feeling sick;
    o COVID-19 Symptoms range from mild symptoms to severe illness and they may appear 2-14 days after exposure. Symptoms may include, but are not limited to, fever, cough, shortness of breath, sudden loss of taste or smell. Residents 65 years or older and individuals with underlying medical conditions are particularly vulnerable to contracting the virus;
  • Regularly clean surfaces touched frequently by people;
  • Practice social distancing recommendations, such as reducing your interactions with large groups or crowds and avoid engaging in public activities.
