Lassen Grizzlies challenge the West Valley Eagles
Friday, Oct. 26 had Lassen Grizzlies take on the West Valley Eagles in Cottonwood, California at West Valley High School.
The West Valley Eagles have been one of the toughest teams this season and were expected to be a challenge against the Lassen Grizzlies.
Varsity and Frosh were unable to overtake West Valley. JV was able to overcome and take a victory for their team.
The Grizzlies fell 21-0 against West Valley varsity. The JV was able to defeat the West Valley Eagles 37-10. Frosh, as well, took a big hit by West Valley 38-8.
Varsity
The Grizzlies have had no issues this season over-running the competition. A few teams, they knew, could challenge their dominance on the field, West Valley was one of these teams.
The Grizzlies’ offense may not have connected for a touchdown in the end, but they were able to make some impressive plays against West Valley. Tucker St. Andre with two huge rushes in yards in which they slipped past the West Valley defensive line.
In the second quarter Hayden Chittock threw a notable long pass to Chandler Monahan and in the third made an equally impressive 30 yard pass to St. Andre in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw a hilarious trade in fumbles and recoveries. The game ending at 21-0 the Grizzlies went in knowing this would be challenging. But after the season they have had so far, this loss still proves that the Grizzlies have a strong team with this loss motivating them for the games to come.
Junior varsity
Following the Frosh loss against the West Valley Eagles the JV team came in heated and ready to engage.
West Valley kicked off to JV with JV unfortunately making an early mistake in a fumble with West Valley to recover it.
JV battered down on the West Valley offense where West Valley decided on a field goal to put early points on the board. West Valley successful field goal brought the score to 3-0 for West Valley.
JV followed up, bringing the ball to the goal line for Briar Dixon with two yard rushing touchdown to over take West Valley 6-3 with a failed two point conversion by the JV.
The second quarter was a battle of defenses for the first half of the quarter. Until the five minute mark, when the JV completed a pass to Lucas Fish for JV’s second touchdown of the night. JV raising the score 12-3 with another unsuccessful two point attempt.
With just under two minutes to go in the second quarter, West Valley responded with their own touchdown and successful PAT bringing the score to 12-10.
The third quarter started with the JV kicking off to West Valley. The JV’s defense forced West Valley into quickly turning over possession on downs at their own 45 yard line. With a play to get into goal range, Dixon with five yard rush brought his second touchdown for JV. The JV brought the score to 18-10 with JV missing the PAT.
At two minutes remaining, JV was forced into a punt back to West Valley where West Valley fumbled to return possession back to the JV team.
In the waning time left, the JV’s Nate Clements rushed the ball 10 yards for the JV’s fourth touchdown of the night bringing the score to 24-10 and fruitless two point conversion.
The JV started the fourth quarter strong. At the seven minute mark, Robby Robles caught an impressive pass in the end zone for JV’s fifth touchdown against West Valley. A successful PAT for the extra point for the JV team brought them to 31-10 over West Valley.
With just less than three minutes to go, JV again brought it to within goal range for Clements to make his second touchdown by way of a 10-yard rush bringing the final score to 37-10 against the West Valley Eagles.
Grizzly football faced off against Shasta at home Friday, Nov. 2, for their final conference game. Results were unavailable as of press time.
