Lassen Library offers family, adult literacy programs

The New Year is always a good time to start taking advantage of what local organizations have to offer — especially the services offered by the local Lassen Library.

Whether it’s your goal to read more, to sign up your little ones for the Family Literacy Program or to study for your GED, the local library has much to offer.

The Family Literacy Program is a free monthly family program geared towards helping with early childhood literacy development. These monthly Saturday programs support families with children ages 0 to 5 years old and encourage and support their early reading development. During these Saturday programs children are able to participate in fun hands-on activities as well as listen to read aloud stories

According to Kelly Kreiensieck, Adult Literacy Program Coordinator, with current COVID limitations the program is a little different, but each month participating families are able to pick up a themed bag usually on the second Saturday of the month with three to four books, crafts and activities to take home.

Lately, the local program has been featuring a different culture or country each month. For January, participants can learn about the Chinese New Year and the winter season.

While the grant-funded program is aimed at helping families who need additional support preparing students for pre-school, the program is open to everyone.

“It’s a great program for the city of Susanville and for helping build home libraries,” Kreiensieck said.

Those enrolling are encouraged to sign up two weeks before the second Saturday of the month.

Moreover, there a various adult programs available for Lassen County residents.

Through the Adult Literacy Program, adults who are interested in improving their literacy skills through one-on-one tutoring and/or workshops/classes are encouraged to enroll.

“We are here to support your educational goal/s ranging from passing the GED to helping refresh basic math and English skills. We do this through individualized curriculum, trained tutors, all in the safe environment of the library. The best part about this is all of these programs are free,” read the Lassen Library Adult Literacy webpage.
