Lassen National Forest extends closure of most of its developed recreation sites through June 11, some sites opening on the Eagle Lake District

The Lassen National Forest is implementing Forest Order 06-20-03 to inform the public that most developed recreation sites will remain closed May 21 through June 11. This order follows Regional order Nos. 20-02 and 20-03, first issued in late March and expiring on May 20.

This decision excludes these sites on the Eagle Lake Ranger District: Aspen Grove Campground, Aspen Grove Boat Launch, Christie Campground, Christie Day Use Picnic Site, Eagle Campground, Gallatin Marina, Merrill Campground and Merrill Amphitheater.

In addition, this order excludes these sites on the Almanor Ranger District: Canyon Dam Boat Launch, Canyon Dam Boat Launch, Lake Almanor Trail Dyer View Trailhead and Black Rock Campground. The order does not close trails, trailheads, general forest areas and specific picnic areas and staging areas that function as trailheads for dispersed recreation; these areas remain accessible for public use. Dispersed camping is welcome as it meets the intent of social distancing. This Forest Order was made in consultation with local county officials and congressional offices.

“By keeping the developed recreation sites, except those listed, closed through June 11, it allows the Forest to provide the time necessary to reopen these sites in a safe manner,” said Deb Bumpus, Forest Supervisor, LNF. “It permits Forest personnel to prepare for the anticipated increases in visitation while minimizing risks that they bring to public health. The value of nature to promote mental and physical health comes at a time when access is vital to the American public. We are working diligently to reopen the trails for full access and ask that visitors be patient during this transition period. Be prepared for other options if your trail is closed, and whenever possible, recreate locally.”
