Lassen National Forest extends closure of most of its developed recreation sites through May 20
The Lassen National Forest is implementing Forest Order 06-20-02 to inform the public that most developed recreation sites will remain closed Saturday, May 16 through Wednesday, May 20. This order follows Regional order Nos. 20-02 and 20-03, first issued in late March and expiring on Friday, May 15.
This decision excludes Canyon Dam Boat Launch, Canyon Dam Boat Launch, Lake Almanor Trail Dyer View Trailhead and Black Rock Campground. The order does not close trails, trailheads, general forest areas and specific picnic areas and staging areas that function as trailheads for dispersed recreation; these areas remain accessible for public use. Dispersed camping is welcome as it meets the intent of social distancing.
“This Forest Order provides for public and employee health and safety by keeping developed recreation sites, except those listed, closed on the Lassen National Forest through Wednesday, May 20,” said Deb Bumpus, Forest Supervisor, LNF. “This closure may be terminated or extended as conditions warrant.”
The value of nature to promote mental and physical health comes at a time when access is vital to the American public. The Forest is working diligently to reopen the trails for full access and ask that visitors be patient during this transition period. Be prepared for other options if your trail is closed, and whenever possible, recreate locally.
If you do plan on visiting the Lassen National Forest, be aware that:
- No trash removal is currently offered – pack out all trash and waste.
- All toilet facilities are currently closed – plan accordingly.
- Avoid high-risk activities – law enforcement and search and rescue operations may be limited.
- If an area is crowded, search for a less occupied location.
The safety of our employees and the public will continue to be the Forest’s number one priority as it closely monitors the situation and implement changes accordingly. The Forest appreciates your cooperation in keeping our national forests safe and healthy for everyone’s use.
