Lassen National Forest seeking scoping comments on Hog Fire Salvage and Rehabilitation Project

The Eagle Lake Ranger District (ELRD) of the Lassen National Forest (LNF) is seeking scoping comments for the Hog Fire Salvage and Rehabilitation Project. The project area is located within the Hog Fire (T30N, R10E, Sections 1, 2, 3, 6, 10, 11, 12, 28, 34 and 35), which started on July 18, 2020 and was contained on August 17, 2020. Approximately 9,564 acres burned, 30% of which were on the ELRD between Highway 44 and Highway 36. This area includes a portion of the Bizz Johnson Trail that stretches from Devil’s Corral to Goumaz campground. Due to recreational use in this area, along with many open system roads that are trafficked by the public and Forest Service employees, there is a need to promptly reduce safety hazards. There is a further need to recover the economic value of fire-killed timber in moderate-high severity burned areas before the wood starts to deteriorate and the value is lost. Proposed activities include salvaging fire-killed trees; falling and/or removing hazard trees along Forest Service open system roads and the Bizz Johnson Trail; site prepping and planting in burned areas; repairing fire-damaged watershed features, and fencing around aspen stands where the fire has exposed regeneration to ungulate browsing.

The purpose of this notice is to invite you to participate in the planning process. It is expected that a Decision Memo for the project will be prepared and made available to the public in November of 2020. The public is encouraged to submit input as it relates to the proposed action and identify any issues about the anticipated effects from the proposed actions.

For detailed information please visit the forest website https://www.fs.usda.gov/projects/lassen/landmanagement/projects. Comments can be sent to: [email protected] with the subject line of Hog Fire Salvage and Rehabilitation Project. Electronic comments must be submitted in a format such as plain text (.txt), rich text format (.rtf), portable document format (pdf), or MS Word (.doc or .docx). Written comments should be mailed to Carol Thornton, District Ranger, ATTN: Hog Fire Salvage and Rehabilitation Project, 477-050 Eagle Lake Rd, Susanville, CA 96130. For additional information contact Cerena Brewen at [email protected] or (530) 257-4188.

While input from the public is always welcome, comments used to develop this proposal will be most helpful if received by the close of business on November 4, 2020.
