Lassen National Forest seeks wildland firefighter apprentices

Lassen National Forest plans to hire 14 wildland firefighter apprentices for the Almanor, Hat Creek, Eagle Lake and Chester Air Base duty stations. The application deadline is Monday, Dec. 12, 2016.

The positions to be filled include:

•Engine modules

•Water tenders

•Type 1 Hotshot crew

•Wildland fire module

•Helitack module

•Dispatch Center

•Fire prevention technicians

•Air Tanker Base

The Wildland Firefighter Apprenticeship Program is designed to enhance and develop future fire and aviation managers by providing education, training, and paid work experience to entry-level firefighters over a 12- to 48-month period. This 3,000-hour on-the-job learning program includes two month-long residential firefighting academies at the Wildland Fire Training Center in McClellan, California. Initial appointments are permanent seasonal for six to seven months.

Upon completion of program requirements, apprentices will become eligible for noncompetitive promotions to the GS-462-5 Forestry Technician “Firefighter Type 1” without further competition and will be reassigned to a permanent full time position on a specific module/crew.

Lassen National Forest lies at the Crossroads of California, where the granite of the Sierra Nevada, the lava of the Cascades and the Modoc plateau, and the sagebrush of the Great Basin meet. The forest is managed for recreational access as well as timber and firewood, forage for livestock, water, minerals, and other natural resources.
