Late goal propels LCC soccer past Redwoods

The Lassen men’s soccer team improved to 5-1 with a road 2-1 win against College of the Redwoods (0-4) in Eureka last Friday.

The Cougars were faced with a challenging opponent and suffered a one-goal deficit early in the first half. Just before the stroke of halftime, in the fortieth minute, Lassen equalized through a glorious left-footed free-kick by Mael Graf from twenty-five yards out.

Lassen built on the momentum of the equalizing goal by dominating possession in the second half. The Cougars were able to break through in the seventieth minute with a goal from Noah Villemeur assisted by a well-timed cross from Mouncef Lahoura, giving the team a one-goal lead with fifteen minutes left in the match.

“I believe we played very well and controlled the tempo of the game,” said Machin. “The conditions we played under were tough, but we need to set these obstacles aside and play our game. The boys worked hard to achieve the goal. Next week will be a challenge for all as we start conference play.”

Machin added, “The team showed a lot of grit and determination by seeing the match through to completion. It wasn’t the prettiest of games, but these types of matches are great lessons to learn as we move forward in achieving our goals this season. That’s how championship teams are built.”

The Cougars will face Contra Costa College in San Pablo, California today, Sept. 21. The match time is set for 4 p.m.
