LHS cross country participates in first two meets of the year

The Lassen High School cross country team held its first home meet last week against challenger West Valley. A few days earlier, LHS traveled to Yreka to take on the Miners in the first meet of the season.

“We’re really proud to finally have the chance to get this going,” LHS Superintendent/Principal Morgan Nugent said during a Facebook live video as the cross country athletes prepared to travel for the first game of the year.

The varsity cross country runners start the 5,000 meter race Friday, Feb. 12.

During the Wednesday, Feb. 10 Northern Athletic League meet at Yreka High School, Henry Baun, of Yreka, came first in the boys 5,000 meter varsity race with a time of 18 minutes, 21.49 seconds. Victor Lujan, and Ko Sekiguchi, both of Yreka, followed in second and third. Jack Duncan was the first to finish for Lassen — in seventh place with a time of 22:28.58. Tobias Hall followed in eighth in 22:34.70, senior William Beterbide, was next in 23:39.97, Jacob Daniels came in at 23:55.65 and Caleb Heffner finished with 24:18.46.

For girls varsity in the 5,000 meter race, Yreka’s Augustine Mylan snagged first with a time of 22:36,73, followed by Yreka’s Isabella Beilke and Rebecca Collins in second and third. Lassen’s Annie Mahnke finished sixth in 34:17.06.

For the boys junior varsity 4,000 meter race. Yreka’s David Nelson, Carson Willmett and Benjamin Trujillo secured the first three spots, with Lassen’s JP Bertotti coming in sixth in 18:22.00. LHS sophomore Jeremy Nielsen came in eighth in 20:16.84, and sophomore Dominic Robsinson followed in ninth place in 25:38.70.

In the girls junior varsity 4,000 meter race, Lassen’s Sierra Marshall took first in 21:55.45, and Anna Sanchez came in second in24:08.79.

During the first home meet against West Valley Friday, Feb. 12, the Grizzlies were able to compete on their own turf for the fist time in a while.

In the boys varsity 5,000 meter race, junior Tobias Hall finished first in 21:20.3, senior Jack Duncan finished second in 22:02.0, followed by William Beterbide in 23:12.5. Seniors Jacob Daniels and Caleb Heffner finished fourth and fifth with times of 23:37.9 and 23:52.0, respectively.

For girls varsity in the 5,000 meter race, LHS senior Brooklyn Smith finished first in 25:25.6, with Gabrielle Robinson of West Valley coming in second.

For the boys junior varsity 4,000 race, JP Bertotti was the first to finish for Lassen, coming in third in 19:04.2. Jeremy Nielsen finished fourth in 21:40.9, and Dominic Robinson finished sixth in 25:22.4.

For the girls junior varsity race, sophomore Sierra Marshall was the first to finish for Lassen and came in second in 23:29.6. Lassen’s Abigail Lynn and Brooklyn Curry came in seventh and eighth in the JV race.

The LHS cross country team is slated to compete in a non-league dual against Fall River at Susanville Ranch Park Friday, Feb. 19.
