Hildagarde Frieda Wunderlich Morlang

Hildagarde Frieda Wunderlich Morlang passed away in Gilroy, California on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019 at the age of 90. She was born on Sept. 24, 1929 to Max and Frieda Wunderlich at the former Westwood Hospital on Elm Street.

Hilda grew up in Westwood and graduated from Westwood High School in 1947. She attended College of Pacific, (now known as the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California) and earned her B. A. in 1951. She began her career as an educator teaching physical education in Camel, Monterey, and Torrance, California. She was married to Pahl Morlang for 10 years.

In 1964 she returned to her hometown with her three young children to teach at Westwood High School. She taught P. E. there for many years and then obtained her library credential and was the school librarian in addition to teaching English. She was advisor for the Ski Club and Girls Athletic Association prior to the passing of Title IX. After the passing of the law in 1972, she supported getting girl’s competitive sports started at Westwood High School. Over the years she coached softball, basketball and volleyball. She retired from teaching in 1988 but continued to work part-time as a coordinator for the Lassen College Extended Day program in Westwood. She was active for over 50 years in Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society for women educators, as well as her local Retired Teachers Association.

Hilda had an independent spirit and enjoyed staying busy! She especially loved being outdoors. Throughout the years she stayed active with her family and friends by skiing, running, biking, and teaching adult exercise classes. She volunteered with youth programs that her children were involved with including Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and the school P.T.A. After retiring, the Westwood Public Library, Westwood Museum and many community and church events kept her busy. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and crafting with other senior citizens.

Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, Max and Frieda; her sister, Gertrude; and her brother, Max Jr. She is survived by her three children; David Morlang, of Fallon, Nevada, Keven Morlang (Margo Baxter-Morlang), of Rancho Cordova, California and Claudia Green (Joe), of Gilroy, California. She has nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

Her family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of her life at 2 p.m. on Nov. 3. at the Westwood Calvary Chapel, 315 Ash St. in Westwood. Hilda requested apple pie and coffee at her memorial, so feel free to bring your favorite pie or finger snack if desired.
