Christa Munter was born Sept. 16, 1939 to Robert and Elfrieda Gortner in Pirmasans, Germany, and passed away Oct. 11, 2018 in Roseburg, Oregon. Christa was one of 10 children born to Robert and Elfrieda, and she remained close to all of her siblings and their children throughout her life. Christa frequently visited her homeland and her family.
When Christa was 19 years old, she met the love of her life, Johnny Munter, an American G. I. Two years later, the couple married on April 18, 1959.
Johnny’s military tour in Germany ended, and he brought his new bride to America, in 1961. He was stationed at Sierra Army Depot in Herlong, California. Upon his discharge from the US Army, Johnny took a civilian job at the army depot, and that is where Christa and Johnny had their daughters, Patty and Terri.
In June of 1972, the couple moved their family to Susanville, California and resided there for almost 30 years. January of 1980 saw Christa transition from a stay-at-home mom to a local small business owner when she and Johnny purchased Stop-N-Shop, Susanville’s second convenience store. This business endeavor was so successful that the couple bought The Party Port in 1985. The Party Port proved to be another successful business venture, and the Munter’s owned and operated it until their retirement in 2000.
Even before finding a buyer for their “Mom and Pop” business, Christa found the home of her dreams, and she and Johnny moved to Myrtle Creek, Oregon. In 2006, after having lived in America for 45 years, Christa finally became an American citizen. She was very proud of that accomplishment.
Christa Munter loved gardening, gourmet cooking, and entertaining friends and family in the beautiful homes that she had created. Christa was preceded in death by her parents, all four of her brothers, Carl, Heinz, Robert, and Rheinholt, three of her five sisters, Ursela, Trudel, and Renata, her youngest daughter, Terri, and her beloved husband, Johnny.
Christa is survived by her daughter, Patty Holmes; son-in-law, Kelley Holmes; her two grandchildren, Jamie Lynn Holmes and Scott Kelley Holmes; and her great-grandson, Stunner Lee Brommett; she is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
No funeral services will be held for Christa, but she will be laid to rest at the Janesville Cemetery, next to her daughter, Terri Munter, and her husband, Johnny Munter at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation in Christa Munter’s name.
