Litchfield man faces DUI charges after Cappezoli Lane crash, brush fire

Litchfield resident Colton Shields, 33, faces charges of driving under the influence following a crash into a bridge and a resulting brush fire.

According to a statement from the California Highway Patrol dispatch notified officers of a traffic collision that had started a fire in the Standish community about 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 28.

CHP located a disabled pickup truck and trailer on Cappezoli Lane. The driver of the truck and trailer had struck a bridge on Cappezoli Lane, and upon impact the trailer’s wheels were sheared from the trailer. The trailer’s axles, which were grinding on the pavement, showered the shoulder with sparks and hot metal and started a brush fire.

While investigating the collision, CHP officers detected the objective signs and symptoms of impairment from Shields, who failed field sobriety tests and was arrested under the suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol and booked into the Lassen County Jail.

The CHP would like to remind residents to never drink and drive. The Susanville CHP would like to acknowledge the Lassen County Sheriff and local fire agencies that responded and kept the brush fire from spreading.
