No one injured in train/boat collision

Two men escaped injury when a train struck a boat their vehicle was towing.

The driver, Gary Cunnington, 60, of Modesto, California and his passenger, John Devrsend, 72, of Valley Springs, California were towing a boat and trailer behind at 2014 Ford F350 pickup on Champs Flat Road north of Highway 44 when Cunnington failed to yield the right of way to a southbound Northern Santa Fe train about 4:05 p.m. Saturday, May 16.

The first engine of the train struck the boat and trailer that detached from the vehicle and came to rest several hundred feet from the intersection.

The truck was undamaged, and the train suffered minor damage in the collision.

According to a statement from the CHP, “Incredibly, no one was injured in the collision.”

The incident remains under investigation.
