Opening arguments for region’s first fentanyl murder case jury trial to start next week

Opening arguments for case against Carson David Schewe regarding the region’s first fentanyl murder case is tentatively going to jury trial at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, in Placer County Superior Court, Department 3 in Auburn.

In February 2022, the Placer County District Attorney’s Office filed a criminal complaint against Schewe for charges of murder and possession of a controlled substance for sale as it related to a local fentanyl-related death.

This case was the first time a defendant in Placer County had been charged with murder for a fentanyl-related death. Since, the DA’s office has secured multiple convictions, but this will be the first jury trial in the region on these charges.
