Opportunities to Submit Comments on the Dixie Postfire Restoration and Recovery Project

The Lassen National Forest is seeking input on issues, concerns, and opportunities associated with the proposed Dixie Postfire Restoration and Recovery Project. In September and October of 2023, the proposed Dixie Fire Community Protection and Swain Mountain Experimental Forest Vegetation Management Project went through the public scoping process. The proposal for that project focused on treating areas impacted by the Dixie Fire within and around adjacent communities, including the wildland–urban interface (WUI). Based on public scoping comments received, the Lassen National Forest reevaluated the scope of the project to assess the Dixie Fire area at a landscape level, resulting in the expansion of the project area to include most of the Dixie Fire perimeter within Lassen National Forest (excluding areas undergoing other planning efforts). This redeveloped proposed action replaces the previous proposal and entails a new public scoping period.

The Dixie Postfire Restoration and Recovery Project (Project) proposes to implement fuels and forest health treatments designed to maintain or promote desired stand structure, reduce fuel loads, increase resilience of surviving forest stands to future disturbance, and facilitate reforestation on lands affected by the 2021 Dixie Fire. By implementing a range of proposed activities, the Forest Service seeks to reduce public health and safety risks and restore healthy ecosystems that are resilient to future wildfire, climate change, pests, pathogens, and other stressors. The Project is being planned within the Almanor, Hat Creek, and Eagle Lake ranger districts of the Lassen National Forest.

A public scoping process under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) commences with this notice and your involvement in this analysis process is encouraged. Any comments related to the proposed action (as supported by the purpose and need) for this project are welcome during this scoping period. More information on this project, including a description of the proposed action, purpose and need, and a link to an interactive StoryMap is available on the Project’s website at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/lassen/?project=63425.
