Pile burning planned today in Lakes Basin area

Today, Plumas National Forest firefighters plan to treat approximately 12 acres of piles near Elwell Lodge and Gold Lake Highway, conditions permitting.

Ignitions are expected to start late morning and should not take long.  The location is near Gold Lake Staging Area in Lakes Basin.

Area residents and visitors planning to recreate in the area should be prepared for increased firefighter traffic and smoke.  Visibility on roads in the project areas may be reduced, especially early in the morning and late evening as smoke settles.  Drivers in the area should use caution.

Smoke is expected to be visible but not have significant long-term impacts to nearby communities, including Graeagle.  Short duration, minor smoke impacts are possible on Gold Lake Highway and neighboring forest roads.

If weather conditions become unfavorable, including increased or gusty winds in the area, burning will stop until conditions improve.  Firefighters will be monitoring conditions throughout the operation.
