Police department urges Fourth of July safety, officers to patrol for illegal fireworks

The Susanville Police Department reminds residents of firework safety tips and regulations as Independence Day nears.

“The members of SPD want you to have a safe and fun weekend,” the department shared. “As such, our officers will be out and about to conduct concentrated patrols concerning illegal fireworks. They are dangerous to light, and are a community fire hazard.”

According to the SPD, it is a misdemeanor to possess or light illegal fireworks per California Health and Safety Code 12680, and that celebratory gunfire is illegal.

“Safe and Sane” fireworks are permitted for use only on July 4th between the hours of 6 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. per 8.48.030 of the City Municipal Code.

The local SPD also reminds residents to have a safe plan to get home if they plan on drinking, and to use a designated driver.

To report the illegal usage of fireworks please call Police Dispatch @ 257-2171, not 911 unless it is an emergency.
