Praise for the Elks Lodge

On behalf of the Mathews family and extended family and friends, we would like to thank the gracious members of the Susanville Elks Lodge who made the recent memorial for Arthur Cahlan Mathews such a resounding success.

Alana Frey and Tom Tinnels, along with Georgiana and John Boring and Pam Robbins, gave of their time and efforts to decorate, prepare and serve our party of 34 with special kindness and hospitality. Art, who would have turned 102 on the day of the event, always spoke with great reverence and appreciation for the town where his family and lifelong friends grew up. Remembering him at the lodge where his father was a member, a site of such prominence and beauty at the top of Main Street, gave all of us an appreciation for the history and character of your lovely town.

The building has a deep connection to the heritage of Susanville and we hope its glory is preserved for many generations to come. We would also like to thank all the businesses and others who made the event possible, especially family friend and local historian Tim Purdy, whose organizing help was indispensable, and minister Calvin Godwin who presided at the graveside ceremony.

Lastly, we would like to acknowledge Susan Arterburn of Chilcoot Monument in Portola who performed the excellent stone masonry for Art’s headstone. The memorial was an unforgettable experience for everyone and we have you all to thank for that.

With sincere gratitude, Joe and Donna Mathews and the entire Mathews family.
