Auto racing was alive and well in Susanville as the Sierra Racing Association announced its schedule for the next year.
Stock car racing ended years earlier until its revival the year prior through the efforts of High Desert Promotions.

The Lassen Community College’s men’s basketball team fell one game short of making the California Community College State Championships after suffering a 103-94 overtime loss to Sacramento City College.
The Cougars were led by Guy Beach’s 28 points, followed by Mike Leonard’s 17. Curtis McFarland scored 15 and Jim Woodard had 11.

The Susanville General Plan Coordinating Committee reached an apparent consensus on the controversial Main Street bypass issue.
The committee — composed of the Susanville City Council and the planning commission — agreed to the rerouting of traffic into Highway 36 from Devil’s Corral to Sierra Road.
But consultants hired by the committee found most of the congestion on Main Street was generated by people driving from one end of town to the other. Thus, the consultants said the addition of stoplights and the completion of Skyline Drive would alleviate the problem.

Following a continued public hearing on the issue, the Lassen County Board of Supervisors voted to approve a proposed water project for the Johnstonville area.
The Johnstonville Water System proposal, according to the draft environmental impact report for the project, involved “a community water storage and distribution system primarily intended to serve industrial and commercial development in the Johnstonville area, although water service area also would be available to provide residential water service.”

A utilities co-op, which is key to the reuse of Sierra Army Depot and a new federal prison in Herlong, became more than talk.
Letters of intent to join the co-op were signed by the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, Lassen County, West Patton Village Community Services District and the Fort Sage School District.
The Susanville Indian Rancheria gave a verbal commitment, according to Local Reuse Authority project manager Pat Landon. Ironically, “the Army has opted not to participate,” in the co-op, Landon said.

Mayor Lino Callegari received the most votes in the race for Susanville City Council, which saw all incumbents re-elected to another term.
According to the final results, before the official canvas of the March 2 presidential primary, Callegari received 1,333 votes, or 24.63 percent. Mayor Pro Tem Doug Sayers had 1,293 votes and incumbent Rod DeBoer won his second elected return to office, taking 1,253 votes.

If he wasn’t wearing a sheriff collar, there’d be no way to tell the loving 3-year-old Belgian Malinois, Hank, was highly skilled in taking down perpetrators and finding narcotics.
Through community support, the Lassen County K9 Association was able to bring a second patrol dog to the area, joining the team with Brinks.
