Rock throwing incident leads to vandalism arrest

According to a statement from the Susanville Police Department, officers arrested Jerry S. Gray, 22, on felony vandalism charges earlier this week.

About 7:25 a.m. Monday, May 3, SPD officers responded to the Golden 1 Credit Union after receiving a report someone had just broken a window.

Officers arrived and began searching the area. An officer observed Gray standing at the Lassen Federal Credit Union and witnessed him throw a rock through one of the businesses windows, shattering it.

A foot pursuit ensued, and the suspect ran through the back business doors of Tractor Supply and towards Main Street. With the assistance of CalFire law enforcement officers and deputies from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, the man was taken into custody on felony vandalism charges.

According to a statement from the SPD, Gray is on active Post Release Community Supervision in Butte County and on probation in Lassen County.

After his arrest, officers began looking at Gray as a possible suspect for the fires at the old Mill Ponds, Napa Auto Parts, Papa Murphey’s Pizza and the other fires in the immediate area this same date in the early morning hours. Arson charges will be referred to the Lassen County District Attorney.

Gray is currently booked into the Lassen County Jail on felony vandalism charges.

The SPD thanked the citizens and business owners who assisted and provided video surveillance as well as the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office and CalFire.
