The Susanville Salvation Army hosts the second annual Kettle Kick-off Dinner at the Assembly of God Church on Richmond Road in Susanville Saturday, Nov. 16. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner (your choice of meat or vegetarian lasagna) begins at 6 p.m. All proceeds stay local to benefit the Susanville Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army gets busy during the holidays, with the familiar bell ringers collecting donations. Volunteer bell ringers will be collecting donations in red kettles in front of many business establishments throughout the holiday season.
The local Salvation Army raises most of its funding for the year through resident’s donations to the red kettles. Money raised locally stays local to support local activities, including emergency assistance for utilities, gasoline, rent, transportation and lodging, Christmas food and Angel Tree gifts, a week-long away-from-home summer camp and a Back-to-School program that provides clothing, backpacks and supplies to local children.
This year the Salvation Army will sponsor Angel Trees at Walmart and Margie’s Book Nook. The Angel Trees provide Christmas gifts for about 100 children from birth to age 17 each year. The tree at Margie’s will have tags for books while the tree at Walmart will have tags for gifts and food.
If you’d like to donate cash, the Salvation Army plans to spend about $50 on gifts for each child. You could make your donation at the Salvation Army office at 1560 Main St. in the Grocery Outlet Shopping Center.
This year the Salvation Army also provides a turkey and a complete Christmas dinner for needy families. In addition, it provides rotisserie chicken and prepared food for about 200 seniors
