On Friday, Sept. 24, the Lassen Cougars (0-6) took on the Consumnes River Hawks (10-4) in non-conference action. Lassen’s squad was hit with some big injuries, leaving the team with only seven healthy netters. The lack of substitutions wore down the Lady Cougars, who lost in three sets to 14-25, 23-25, and 13-25.
Those seven included Josephine Booth, Anyah Grigsby, Kelli Walsh, Taysha Ortega, Grace Felton, Giovanna Aldana and Hope Serrano. All but Aldana had the opportunity to play front row, and all scored.
Big blocks in the middle kept the second set tight. Grigsby in particular had a big day with four kills, four solo blocks and 4 digs. Kelli Walsh chipped in with four kills and six digs, along with Serrano who had four kills and seven digs.
“For such a small group they really came together strong,” said Head Coach Julia Erickson. “We had quite a few last minute injuries that would have made most teams struggle. This team is a tough bunch despite their current record.”
The Cougs will have a two week break from matches to recover. Their next match is their conference opener at home on Oct., 8 at 6 p.m. They will take on the Feather River College Eagles.
