Sunday’s Casino shooting suspect in custody

Update: Yesterday afternoon, Monday, Sept. 11, Lassen County District Attorney Susan Rios made this statement on the DA office’s Facebook page. “This individual posted bail today before he could be brought to court for arraignment. His court date for arraignment on these charges is Oct. 18, which is the date he was given by the bail agency.”

It took Susanville Police officers about three hours to locate him, but a Sacramento man suspected of discharging a firearm during a fight in the Diamond Mountain Casino parking lot about 12:47 a.m. Sunday morning is now in custody.

According to a statement from the SPD, officers located Victor Velasquez, Jr., 20, of Sacramento on the 900 block of Main Street about 3:30 a.m. Sunday. He is charged with battery with serious bodily injury, being a felon in possession of a firearm, willful discharge of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm not registered, carrying a loaded handgun with a prior felony conviction and possessing a firearm without an identification mark.

Officers responded to the casino after a report of a fight in the parking lot in which one of the suspects was armed with a firearm.

Officers arrived in minutes of the call, and with assistance from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol, investigators determined a shot had been fired, but no injuries were reported. The man with the firearm had “fled the scene” in a vehicle with a group of people, and witnesses provided descriptions of those involved in the fight as well as a description of their vehicle.

Officers located the group on Main Street, and two handguns were located “where Velasquez had been standing when contacted by law enforcement.”

The case has been forwarded to the Lassen County District Attorney for reviews.
