A Susanville man was arrested for felony driving under the influence after being involved in a three-car accident that injured two people.
According to a statement from the California Highway Patrol, Delbert Gavin, 53, of Susanville, was taken into custody for felony DUI after he admitted “consuming alcoholic beverages prior to driving and displayed objective signs and symptoms of alcoholic intoxication” and failed a field sobriety test. He suffered major injuries and was transported to Banner Lassen Medical Center in Susanville.
Justin Weber, 35, of Cottage Grove, Utah, suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada.
The driver of the third vehicle, Robert Eide, 76, of Susanville, was not injured.
The CHP reports Gavin was driving a 1994 Plymouth Voyager minivan northbound in the No. 2 passing lane on Highway 395 about 5:47 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4 when, due to his level of intoxication, he made an unsafe lane change and hit the right front of a 2017 Toyota Tacoma driven by Eide, causing Gavin’s Plymouth to rotate counter-clockwise into the path of a 2021 Dodge Ram driven southbound on Highway 395 by Weber.
