Susanville Symphony announces new season
When summer grows long in the tooth, children make their way to school and everyone anticipates the coming fall in the air, it’s time for a new season for the Susanville Symphony Society. Here’s information about the upcoming season.
8th annual Concert on the Green
5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17
Lassen County Historic Courthouse
“This has become the most popular concert of the year,” said conductor and artistic director Ben Wade. “Bring a picnic basket, blanket, lawn chairs, adult beverages and more to the opening concert of the 19th annual Susanville Symphony Season. The first half will be the Susanville Symphony performing everything from ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ to ‘Stairway to Heaven.’ The second half will feature the Susanville City Big Band. Come sing and dance and enjoy the festivities. Children 16 and under with an adult are free.”
An Evening of Jazz with Wayne Bergeron
7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28
7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29
Veterans Memorial Hall
“Susanville Symphony presents Wayne Bergeron and the Susanville City Big Band,” said Wade. “Arguably the best trumpet player in the world, Wayne Bergeron is leaving the studio life in Los Angeles for a weekend in Susanville. Wayne rarely comes north and has not given a full-featured concert like this for more than 5 years. Bergeron can be heard playing lead trumpet on almost every single movie soundtrack (from ‘The Incredibles’ to ‘West Side Story’). There will also be a sponsored Yamaha brass masterclass (first come, first served) on Saturday morning before the concert.
A Susanville Christmas
7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16
2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17|
Susanville Elks Lodge
“Christmas in Susanville,” said Wade. “Our holiday concert where families gather from all around to celebrate the holiday season. With classical favorites from the ‘Nutcracker’ to pop favorites like ‘Santa Baby,’ this is the feel-good concert of the year.”
Susanville Big Band
7 p.m. Friday, March 25
Veterans Memorial Hall
Unleashing its new-found power, the newly formed Susanville Big Band will play your old favorites like ‘In the Mood’ and ‘Under the Sea,’ but also performing difficult jazz, funk and soul numbers like ‘Chameleon,’ ‘Nice and Juicy’ and more,” said Wade. “This is not your grandfather’s swing band.”
Susanville Pops Concert
7 p.m. Saturday, May 13
Susanville Elks Lodge
“A tribute to John Williams,” said Wade. “This year we focus on famous movie themes: ‘Dances with Wolves,’ ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Last of the Mohicans’ and more.”
