Toys For Tots collects toys, donations for the holiday season
The idea of children missing out on receiving gifts at Christmas makes most of us more than a just little melancholy.
Lassen County’s Toys For Tots (a local nonprofit group not associated with the U.S. Marine Corps program) joins other local organizations such at the Salvation Army and the Holiday with a Hero and steps up every year to fill that need.
Over the years the local Toys For Tots has provided Christmas presents for between 300 and 500 children all across Lassen County — including Susanville, Herlong, Big Valley and Westwood. Last year they provided presents for about 350 children.
If your family is in need of gifts for the kids this holiday season, the deadline to apply is Friday, Dec. 10. Call 260-1222 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. If there is no answer, leave a message, and someone will call you back. Those seeking gifts will need to fill out an application, but the folks who answer the Toys for Tots phone can answer all your questions and help you fill out the application form.

The toys will be distributed at the Lassen County Fairgrounds Saturday, Dec. 18. Toyland at the fairgrounds will be open through Jan. 1.
In years passed, parents could wander through Toyland and select gifts for their children, but that practice remains on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parents should park at the Armory parking lot at the fairgrounds and a Toys for Tots volunteer will bring the gifts to them.
Check the Toys for Tots Facebook page for other information and other donation sites during the holidays. Toys for Tots also will be collecting toys for children at the Magical Country Christmas celebration in Uptown Susanville.
Cash or check donations can be mailed to Toys for Tots, PO Box 171, Susanville, CA 96130.
