The first inking of an event already in progress came when Matt Mullin set up a music stand and began playing his tuba in the middle of Safeway.

None of the customers at Safeway in Susanville probably saw it coming, but a few eyebrows raised as Matt Mullin walked into the store crowded with holiday shoppers about 2:10 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20 carrying a music stand and a big tuba. Mullin sat down in front of the cash registers and began playing “Joy to the World,” and suddenly about two dozen Susanville Choral Society members decked out in holiday attire (many pushing empty shopping carts) joined in, singing the words to the old hymn as some customers and employees joined in. The flash mob performance ignited the holiday spirit for everyone within earshot, and the group received a heartfelt round of applause. Suddenly, the event ended just as quickly as it began.

And then all at once the joyful flash mob appeared from the crowded aisles.
