Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011 • Boy Scouts collect food for charities

With help from the community, area charities received significantly more food than last year.

On Saturday, Nov. 12, local Boy Scout troops, packs and the Susanville Fire Department Explorer Post picked up food for its Scouting For Food program and gave the items to Crossroads Ministries and Salvation Army.

Cub Scout Pack 405 members Justice Hickman, left, Logan Leckie, Jaden Clark, Graeson Glover, Kaden Dellacort and Korbin Rogers unload the food they collected during the Scouting For Food drive at Crossroads Ministries.

According to Dawn Leckie, committee chair for Cub Scout Pack 405 who organized Scouting For Food this year, the scouts stopped by approximately 4,500 homes in the Susanville, Johnstonville, Richmond Road and Janesville areas, and she estimated about one of every eight to 10 homes had food. Donated items include rice, cereal, juice, soups, canned vegetables, baby food and peanut butter.

“We had an amazing turnout and support from the community,” Leckie said.

During the week of November 14, Leckie said people were still turning in food at the Susanville Fire Department.

If residents would still like to participate, they can call Leckie. She said the scouts will collect food as long as there are donations.

Crossroads also received jackets from Banner Lassen Medical Center’s coat drive.

Executive Director Cherri Farrell said of the donations, “The community went over the top and it is such a blessing to us.

Not only does Scouting For Food benefit the organizations, it is good for the boys.

Leckie said, “It’s great for the boys to give back to the community.”
