VFW hosts third annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day celebration

The local Veterans of Foreign Wars William Davidson Post 2381 hosts the third annual Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home ceremony from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 31 at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Susanville.

Maurice Sanchez, a U.S. Cobra pilot in Vietnam, was the guest speaker at last year’s event, and he shared his experiences in Vietnam as well as those when he came home.

Larry Rogers, a retired master sergeant, will serve as the master of ceremonies.

Jim Dandois, the VFW’s post commander, will lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

Hannah Danes, of Johnstonville Elementary School, will sing the national anthem.

Anthony Lares, the VFW post chaplain, will offer the invocation.

Chris Gallagher, chairman of the Lassen County Board of Supervisors, will read a proclamation.

Joe Franco, the city of Susanville mayor pro Tem, will read a proclamation.

Mel Morrison, a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran (1962), is the honored guest.

An open mic will give Vietnam veterans an opportunity to speak.

Lares will offer a benediction and Rogers will offer the closing comments.

The Lassen High School Cadet Corps will play “Taps” at noon.

The festivities then move downstairs, and the VFW will serve a free lunch to community. A drawing will be held at 1:15 p.m. (you must be present to win). The Post Canteen will be open for refreshments.

The officers of the VFW include Jim Dandois, commander; Paul Chappell, senior vice commander; Donald Moose, junior vice commander; Ronald Wood, adjutant/ quartermaster; Anthony Lares, chaplain; and Larry Rogers, service officer.
