DeMaio says industry warning of California gas supply crisis that will push prices to $10-per gallon
Even as the nation enjoys surprisingly low gas prices this summer, Assemblyman Carl DeMaio says California Governor Gavin Newsom and state legislators recently received private briefings from the California oil and gas industry warning of a looming crisis that will likely spike the cost of gas to $10-12 per gallon if action is not taken soon.
Carl DeMaio.“Industry experts have privately warned state leaders in closed-door briefings to expect severe price spikes and catastrophic supply disruptions if we do not act to fix the problems in California’s oil and gas industry,” DeMaio warned. “The insane regulations and mandates imposed on oil and gas markets by Governor Gavin Newsom and California Democrats are singularly to blame.”
DeMaio is calling on Newsom to immediately convene an emergency session of the state legislature to enact the following policies:
• Provide for emergency permitting authority for domestic oil production to resume in California without costly and unnecessary regulations and mandates.
• Repeal laws and regulations that have made it economically impossible to refine gas within the state of California – leading to the shutdown of more than 50 percent of California’s refining capacity since 2010.
• Enact emergency regulatory relief to ensure the continued operation of California pipelines.
• Roll back the Low Carbon Fuel Standard regulations that are predicted to spike gas prices by 65-cents per gallon.
• Provide for immediate suspension of the state excise and Cap-and-Trade gas tax that impose nearly $1 in state tax burden on every gallon of gas anytime California gas prices are 10 percent higher than the national average.
