LaMalfa statement on Democrat-led government shutdown
Congressman Doug LaMalfa issued the following statement on the government shutdown.
“Republicans passed a straightforward, seven-week funding bill to keep the government running free of gimmicks and poison pills. Democrats rejected it and forced a shutdown.
“These are the same Democrats who once warned that shutdowns were reckless and harmful to veterans, servicemembers, families and the economy. Now they’ve manufactured the very crisis they claimed to fear.
“Rather than maintaining essential services for the American people, Democrats tried to advance a short-term funding bill filled with huge new spending and partisan demands. They chose politics over governing, and every consequence of this shutdown falls squarely on their shoulders.”
Background
The House-passed Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act of 2026 extended government funding for seven weeks at current levels.
The bill protected funding for healthcare programs, critical telehealth services, and food supplements for women, infants, and children.
Democrats rejected the clean extension and proposed a partisan CR that included:
• Restoring taxpayer-funded health care for illegal aliens.
• $500 million to prop up liberal news programs.
• Prioritizing electric vehicles in HOV lanes, regardless of occupancy.
• Removing work requirements for able-bodied adults on taxpayer-funded health programs.
• Resuming DEI projects in foreign countries.
• More than $1 billion more in taxpayer-funded defense for criminals.
• Repealing $50 billion in rural health care funding, hurting hospitals and clinics.
• Rescinding border security measures passed through the Working Families Tax Cuts,
• Usurping the President’s authority over emergency funds.
• Locking in Biden-era grant policies to override President Trump’s executive orders,
• $1.5 trillion in new spending for just seven weeks of funding
