GIFFORDS Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence released the latest edition of its Annual Gun Law Scorecard, which grades and ranks each state on the strength of its gun laws. The comprehensive, 50-state analysis reflects that states with stronger gun laws have lower gun death rates and save more lives. This year, California received an A. In 2025, California strengthened various protective order laws, banned convertible pistols and strengthened its existing ghost gun laws.
“Through strong leadership, California earned an A grade on the GIFFORDS Annual Gun Law Scorecard this year. Commonsense gun laws stop crime and save lives, and California is proof of just how effective they can be,” said Emma Brown, Executive Director of GIFFORDS. “While we celebrate the progress made in states like California, we still have more lifesaving work to do.
“Every day we lose more than 125 people — mothers and fathers, children and teenagers, students and neighbors — to gun violence. The pain of this crisis is terrible, but preventable. Americans deserve to live safely, and it is the responsibility of our leaders to protect them,” Brown added.
