Fire destroys old Fruit Growers Mill on Riverside Drive

An early morning fire (of unknown origin at the time of this post) apparently has destroyed the old Fruit Growers Supply Company Mill on Riverside Drive in Susanville.

One commenter of Facebook reported waking up to explosions and “erupting embers” across towm.

According to a Facebook post by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, “Early this morning, Lassen County deputies responded to the old mill property on Riverside Drive after reports of a fire. Within minutes, the structure was reported to be fully involved.

“This is a hard loss for Susanville. For many in our community, the old mill was more than just a landmark. It was part of the history and identity of this town.

“We are grateful there have been no reported injuries to civilians or first responders.

“Thank you to all fire personnel, law enforcement, public works, LMUD, and assisting agencies who responded during the early morning hours and worked to protect the surrounding area.

“If anyone has information regarding how this fire may have started, call Lassen County Dispatch at (530) 257-6121.

“Please continue to use caution in the area as crews may still be working nearby.”

According to a Facebook post by the California Highway Patrol at 7 a.m. this morning, “Our units assisted with road closures along Riverside Road due to the mill catching fire early this morning. While we have lost an irreplaceable piece of our community’s history, we are immensely grateful that there were no injuries to civilians or firefighters. Huge thanks to our first responders for preventing the fire from spreading further. The roadways are now open, but please use caution in the area for fire personnel still on scene.

Merry Morsels on Main Street thanked fire fighters and offered them a free cup of coffee.

According to a Facebook post, “As most of you know by now, this happened. And the first responders involved really handled it. We are so proud and grateful to our amazing men and women. We would like to say thank you to all first responders this morning with a complimentary coffee. We will open at 8 ready to serve you!”
