LFS celebrates Denim Day this Wednesday

Denim Day — Wednesday, April 29 — is an annual day of action and awareness where people wear denim to show support for survivors of sexual assault, according to a statement from Lassen Family Services. The Denim Day Walk takes place at noon this Wednesday, April 29, 2026.

Please join us as we take our annual Denim Day Walk. Meet and begin the walk at Lassen Family Services at 1306 Riverside Drive.

The Walk is approximately 1 to 1.5 miles. Be sure to bring your Real Teal beverage that you can purchase at any of our three supporting businesses- Joe’s Coffee, The Blue Ox, or Smokin’ Bean!

Show your support online by posting a picture of you wearing your denim to Facebook with the hashtag #LFSDENIMDAY2026.

There will be a group prize and an individual prize awarded.

We will be picking a winner of our denim day drawing on Thursday, April 30.

Denim Day is recognized on the last Wednesday in April in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court to overturn a rape conviction because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight-fitting denim jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove them, thereby implying consent. Following the reversal, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.

Inspired by this case and the activism surrounding it, Peace Over Violence and Executive Director Patti Giggans developed the Denim Day campaign in 1999.  Since then, what started as a local event in Los Angeles to bring awareness to victim blaming and destructive myths that surround sexual violence has grown into a worldwide movement.

As the longest-running sexual violence prevention and education campaign in history, Denim Day asks community members, elected officials, businesses and students, and all individuals  to make a social statement with their fashion statement by wearing jeans on Denim Day as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions that continue to surround sexual violence.
