California ranks as the third spookiest state in America
It’s spooky season, and Americans will be eagerly preparing for their upcoming costumed celebrations, monster mayhem and trick-or-treating. This got us thinking: What are the spookiest states in the US?
To answer this question, the team at High 5 Casino conducted a new study looking at four frightening factors: Haunted attractions, horror-themed escape rooms, ghost sightings and average haunted house rating. So, if you want to be seriously spooked this Halloween, these are the states to visit.

Ohio
Ohio takes the crown as the spookiest state in America, scoring a menacing 8.00 out of 10. With 134 haunted attractions, Ohio has more spine-chilling locations than any other state. But that’s just the tip of the tombstone, Ohio also tops our list for ghost sightings — 19 in the past year alone. With an average haunted house rating of 8.42/10, it’s no surprise that the spirits are restless here. And, for those who dare to take on a creepy challenge, Ohio has 32 horror themed escape rooms – the fifth highest on our list.
Illinois
Second place goes to Illinois, which scored 6.96 out of 10. With 106 haunted attractions, it places third in that category. If those aren’t spine-chilling enough, Illinois has had 14 ghost sightings in the past year – also third highest in the nation. And, with an average haunted house rating of 8.88, you never know what might be lurking in the shadows!

California
Close behind is California, the third-spookiest state, with a score of 6.48 out of 10. The Golden State ranks second highest in both haunted attractions and horror themed escape rooms, making it a prime spot for those seeking bone-rattling thrills.
Indiana
Indiana ranks fourth with a score of 6.11 out of 10. The Hoosier State is crawling with paranormal activity, ranking second for ghost sightings (18 in the past year). And for those who dare to venture into the unknown, Indiana has a nightmarish 86 haunted attractions and 19 horror themed escape rooms.
Florida
Tied with Indiana, Florida ranks fifth on our spooky scale. While it’s famous for theme parks, Florida is also home to more menacing attractions – 57 horror themed escape rooms (highest in the nation) and 92 haunted attractions. However, with only two ghost sightings in the past year, you might have more to fear from gators than ghosts.
Methodology
The data ranks 50 US states on how good they are for Halloween based on four factors:
• Haunted attractions – The number of haunted attractions per state, as recorded on thescarefactor.com.
• Horror-themed escape rooms – The number of horror-themed escape rooms in each state, as recorded on thescarefactor.com.
• Ghost sightings – The number of paranormal ghost sightings in each state in the past year, as recorded on thescarefactor.com.
• Average haunted house rating – The average rating of all haunted house attractions listed on the thescarefactor.com, per state.
Once the data for the factors was collected, the factors were then normalized to provide each one with a score of between 0 and 1. If data was not available, a score of 0 was given. The normalized values were then added together, giving each state a total score. The states were then ranked from high to low based on their total score.
