California Water Commission set to consider new dam safety regulations
At the April 15, 2026, meeting of the California Water Commission, staff from the Department of Water Resources’ Division of Safety of Dams will present proposed additions and modifications to existing dam safety regulations for the commission’s consideration.
DSOD regulates approximately 1,230 non-federal dams for the purpose of safeguarding life and property from dam failures. One of the statutory responsibilities of the California Water Commission is to approve DWR’s proposed regulations not pertaining to the management and administration of the Department.
The meeting is open to the public and will also be live streamed online.

Also on the April meeting agenda, the commission will decide whether to award supplemental funding to offset inflation for the Harvest Water Program, the first project in the Water Storage Investment Program to receive its final funding award and begin construction. Commission staff will also provide an update on its outreach and engagement metrics and activities.
