Caltrans invites motorists to learn more about Highway 44/Silver Bridge Road Intersection Safety Project

Caltrans is sharing information about the Highway 44/Silver Bridge Road Intersection Safety Project in Shasta County to allow the traveling public to learn more about the project, better understand the benefits of roundabouts and share comments and questions early in the project development process.

The project will enhance safety and improve traffic operations by constructing a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Highway 44 and Silver Bridge Road. The improvements are intended to reduce the frequency and severity of high-speed, multi-vehicle and right-angle collisions while addressing increasing traffic demands and operational challenges at the intersection.

There is a demonstrated safety need at this location. Between April 24, 2020, and April 23, 2025, nine collisions were reported at the intersection, including one fatal collision, seven injury collisions and one property-damage-only collision.

Roundabouts are designed to improve roadway safety by slowing vehicle speeds, reducing conflict points and improving traffic flow. Studies have shown roundabouts can significantly reduce severe and fatal crashes compared to traditional intersections controlled by stop signs or traffic signals.

As part of the preliminary work, Caltrans is currently developing a Project Initiation Document. Construction is anticipated to begin in Summer 2030.
