A firefighter suffered injuries Saturday, July 27, while responding to a vegetation fire in the area of Skyline Road and Highway 36.
According to a statement from the Susanville Fire Department, about 6:11 p.m. Saturday, units from the Susanville Fire Department responded to a vegetation fire in the area of Skyline Road and Highway 36 in the Susan River Fire District.
Susanville Truck 1 (T-1) and Squad 651 quickly deployed hose packs from the engines and started a fire attack with progressive hose lay. Due to the high winds, the fire was spreading rapidly and began spotting. T-1, with the assistance of a partial Cal-Fire hand crew, was able to stop the forward progression of the fire, at approximately 12 feet by 340 feet. Crews then began mopping up the fire and securing the fire line. Mop-up continued until all heat was extinguished.
The fire started in a homeless encampment; the cause is still under investigation. There was one firefighter injury and no civilian injuries.
