Horse Gulch Combined Project begins construction in April

Caltrans will start construction on the Horse Gulch Combined project (previously the Horse Gulch Curve Safety Project and Horse Gulch Gap Project). The project will completely realign the segment of highway within the project limits, enhance roadway geometrics, and improve ride quality on SHighway 36 in Tehama County. The project includes earthwork, removing existing asphalt concrete, installing 4-foot and 8-foot shoulders, installing centerline and edge line rumble strips, replacing fencing, and replacing culverts.

The project is located in Tehama County on Highway 36 about 26 miles west of Red Bluff, and just over 5 miles east of Dry Creek Bridge.

Tentatively starting April 20, there will be traffic control on Highway 36 east of Dry Creek Bridge while work begins. Motorists can anticipate traffic control Monday through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Fridays from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at this location. Expected delays may extend up to 10 minutes.

The $5 million project includes 85 working days, with all days requiring traffic control. 24-hour traffic control is required during times when traffic is on an unpaved surface. The entire project is expected to be completed by fall of 2026.
